Accessibility Statement

How we have built this website so that as many people as possible can use it, where it still falls short, and how to tell us about a problem.

Our aim

Who this website is for

This website is run by Solent Skylights Southampton. We want everyone who is planning a rooflight, or helping someone else plan one, to be able to read our guides, find the information they need and contact us. That includes people who use a screen reader, magnify the screen, move around a page by keyboard or voice, or find long pages of text hard going.

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard widely used for UK websites.

What we have done

How the site is built for access

  • Text has strong contrast against its background, checked against the WCAG ratios for normal and large text.
  • Pages can be zoomed to twice their normal size and read on a narrow phone screen without scrolling sideways.
  • Every page has one main heading, and headings run in order so screen reader users can move through them.
  • A skip link at the top of each page jumps straight to the main content.
  • The menu, the services dropdown and the WhatsApp form work with a keyboard, show where the focus is, and close with the Escape key.
  • Every photograph that carries information has a text description; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Form fields we build have visible labels linked to the field.
  • Motion is kept to small effects, and it switches off when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Tables, such as the build programme charts, are real tables with headings, so the information is available without seeing the bars.

Known issues

Where the site may fall short

We know of the following limitations and are working on them:

  • The enquiry form is provided by a third party and shown in an embedded frame. We have chosen a provider whose form uses labelled fields, but we do not control its code. If you have any difficulty with it, email or WhatsApp us instead and we will take your details directly.
  • The interactive maps of our service area can be hard to use with a keyboard or screen reader. The same information is given in text: our areas page lists every town we cover with its distance from Southampton.
  • Some older PDF documents from manufacturers, such as product data sheets, may not be fully accessible. We can send the information in another format on request.

Your setup

Making the site work for you

Your own device can do a lot to make any website easier to use. You can change the text size in your browser settings, use your operating system's high contrast or dark mode, and turn on a screen reader or magnifier from the accessibility settings. Phones and tablets also let you have pages read aloud.

The charity AbilityNet publishes clear, step by step guides to these settings for every common device, in plain English. Our pages are built to respect your settings: text resizes with your browser, focus outlines stay visible, and animations stop when your device asks for reduced motion.

Tell us

Reporting a problem or asking for another format

If you find something on this website hard to use, or you need information in a different format, such as large print or a plain text email, please contact us at info@solentskylightssouthampton.co.uk or by WhatsApp. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will reply within two working days.

We read every report. Where we can fix a problem on the site, we will; where we cannot fix it straight away, we will make sure you get the information or service you need another way.

Beyond the website

Surveys and visits

Accessibility does not stop at the screen. If you would find it easier for us to explain a quote in person, to send documents in a particular format, or to arrange a survey at a particular time of day, just say. We are also happy to deal with a family member, friend or other representative if you ask us to.

Testing

How this statement was prepared

This statement was prepared on the date shown at the top of the page, based on testing of the website by the team that built it, including automated checks for contrast, headings, labels and alternative text, keyboard testing of the menus and forms, and checks at narrow screen widths and high zoom. We will review it whenever the website changes significantly.

Each time we add a new kind of page, such as a new guide layout, it is checked in the same way before it goes live, so the standard holds as the site grows. Your reports help us keep it that way.
